No alcoholic beverages of mind-altering substances are permitted on the premise nor are they to be used by the resident off the premises. Each resident is responsible for the cleanliness of his own living area, bathrooms after use, and other cleaning duties as assigned by Freedom House staff. Residents must participate in household activities, like weekly meetings and regular chores. Inmates can only leave by signing out for approved activities, which include seeking employment, Going to work or counseling, or participating in recreational activities. If a resident knows someone is breaking the rules, they are to report it to staff.

There was a hope that the inmates in the program would be less likely to re-enter the prison system. Everyone must attend either 12-step meetings or another recovery meeting. The length of stay varies tremendously, but most people stay anywhere between three to twelve months. The length of stay gives them enough time to secure a steady job and feel confident in their sobriety. Considering the limitations and demands that group living presents to residents, the following rules have been devised so that all may reside in an orderly and manageable manner. Who Can Live In A Halfway House

Sex offenders and deportable illegal aliens are ineligible for placement in federal halfway houses, but the same is not true of all state-run programs. Nonviolent offenders receiving short sentences might serve the entire time in a halfway house.
